1. Structural Engineering

  • Engineering Mechanics: Simple stress and strain; plane stress & plane strain; Mohr’s circle; bending moment & shear force; simple bending theory; flexural and shear stresses; columns & struts; uniform torsion.
  • Structural Analysis: Determinate & indeterminate structures; analysis of beams, trusses, arches, cables, frames; beam deflection; moment distribution method; slope deflection method; conjugate beam method; rolling loads & influence lines.
  • Construction Materials, Practices & Management: Stone, sand, timber, bricks, cement, structural steel, paints; concrete technology; mix design; detailing of walls, floors, roofs, doors/windows; construction management; project planning, rate analysis, PERT & CPM.
  • Design of Concrete Structure: Working stress, limit state & ultimate load concepts; design of beams, slabs, columns, footings; prestressed concrete principles, methods, losses, anchorages.

2. Engineering Surveying

  • Classification of surveys; surveying principles; scales; errors & adjustment; distance & angle measurement; levelling & trigonometric levelling; traversing & triangulation; total station.

3. Water Resources Engineering

  • Fluid Mechanics & Hydraulic Engineering: Fluid properties, hydrostatics, fluid kinematics, momentum & energy equations, viscous flow, flow in pipes, pipe networks, boundary layer, dimensional analysis, open channel flow, hydraulic machines.
  • Hydrology & Flood Management: Hydrological cycle, precipitation, evaporation, infiltration, watershed, runoff, hydrograph, stream-flow measurement, groundwater occurrence, aquifers, Darcy’s law, flood estimation, flood routing, river training, dams & embankments.
  • Irrigation Engineering: Crop water requirement, duty & delta, evapotranspiration estimation, irrigation systems, canal design, headworks, waterlogging & drainage, regulatory works.

4. Environmental Engineering

  • Water Supply Engineering: Water sources, quality, standards, treatment (aeration, sedimentation, coagulation, filtration, disinfection), hardness, chemical softening, distribution system design.
  • Waste Water Engineering: Sewerage systems, sanitary sewage quantity, treatment methods, disposal.
  • Introduction to Air Pollution, Noise Pollution, Solid Waste.

5. Transportation Engineering

  • Highway alignment & surveys, geometric design, cross-sectional elements, gradients, curves, pavement design (flexible & rigid), materials, traffic studies, accident studies, traffic signs & signals, channelization, rotary & intersection design.

6. Geotechnical Engineering

  • Soil Mechanics: Soil origin, structure, fabric, phase relationships, classification, permeability, seepage, compaction, consolidation, shear strength, stress analysis, soil stabilization.
  • Foundation Engineering: Types & selection criteria; earth pressure theories (Rankine & Coulomb); stress distribution; shallow foundations (Terzaghi & Meyerhoff), deep foundations, pile load tests, negative skin friction.
