PAPER-I: Mechanical Engineering (Bachelor Degree Standard)

Time: 2 Hours

1. Engineering Mechanics

• Equilibrium of Rigid Bodies: FBD, supports, reactions, concurrent & non-concurrent forces.
• Analysis of Structures: Method of joints, sections, graphical methods.
• Friction: Laws of Coulomb, inclined plane, ladder, wedge.
• Centre of Gravity & Moment of Inertia: Centroid, parallel & perpendicular axis theorem, mass moment of inertia, radius of gyration, M.I. of composite bodies.
• Lifting Machines: Lever, pulley, wheel & axle.
• Virtual Work & Energy: Principle of virtual work.
• Impulse, Momentum, Work & Energy.

2. Electrical Technology

• DC Machines: Construction, EMF equation, characteristics, losses, efficiency, speed control, starting.
• Transformer: Construction, EMF equation, phasor diagrams, efficiency, voltage regulation.
• Induction Motors: 3-phase, single-phase, starting methods, torque-slip curves.
• AC Synchronous Machines: Alternators, synchronous motors, starting methods.
• Measuring Instruments: Wattmeter, energy meter.

3. Basic Thermodynamics

• System & Continuum, Intensive & Extensive properties.
• Laws of Thermodynamics: Zeroth, First, Second laws, Carnot cycle, entropy.
• Properties of Steam: Latent heat, saturation, superheat, ranking cycles.
• Air Standard Cycles: Otto, Diesel, dual cycles.
• Fuels & Combustion: Classification, calorimetry, air requirement, Orsat apparatus.

4. Theory of Machines

• Simple Mechanisms: Slider-crank, four-bar, steering linkages.
• Governors: Watt, Porter, Hartnell, inertia governors.
• Cam: Classification, displacement diagrams.
• Friction & Friction Drives: Belt, rope drives, clutches, brakes.
• Gear & Gear Trains: Simple, compound, epicyclic, reverted.
• Flywheel: Energy fluctuations, coefficient of fluctuation.

5. Fluid Mechanics

• Fluid properties, statics, pressure, buoyancy.
• Kinematics: Lagrangian/Eulerian, flow lines, stream functions.
• Dynamics: Bernoulli equation, momentum, energy equation.
• Flow Measurement: Venturimeter, orificemeter, Pitot tube.
• Pipe Flow: Laminar, turbulent, Darcy-Weisbach.
• Complex Stresses & Strains: Principal stresses, Mohr’s circle, combined bending/torsion.

6. Heat Transfer

• Conduction: 1-D, composite systems, fins, lumped system.
• Radiation: Blackbody, grey body, radiation exchange, view factors.
• Convection: Natural & forced.
• Diffusion & Mass Transfer.

7. Industrial Engineering & Management

• Organization, Plant Location & Layout.
• Network Analysis: CPM, PERT, critical path, float, crashing.
• Work Study: Method/Motion study, time measurement.
• Product Design & Development: PLC, value analysis.
• Production Planning & Inventory Control: EOQ, ABC, VED, FSN analysis.
• Maintenance Management: TPM, types, standards.
• Quality Control & Total Quality Management.

8. Air Conditioning

• Psychrometry, properties, processes, charts.
• Comfort A/C: Temperature, load analysis, duct design, air distribution.
• Equipment: Fans, cooling towers, coils, filters, dehumidifiers, heaters.
• Instruments & Controls: Temperature, humidity, air velocity, thermostats, pneumatic control.
