Scheme of Examination
The examination consists of two parts:
- Part I (Written): Conventional (Essay) type papers for 1000 marks.
- Part II (Viva Voce): Personality test for 200 marks for those who qualify the written part.

How to Apply?
Candidates must apply online through the UPSC’s official portal:
- OTR (One Time Registration): Create a profile at upsconline.nic.in if not already done.
- Fill Application: Complete the Common Application Form (CAF) and the Examination Specific Module.
- Photo & Signature: Upload a scanned photograph and signature. A Live Photo Capture is also required during the application.
- Fee Payment: ₹200 (Female/SC/ST/PwBD are Exempted).
- Final Submission: Submit before the deadline. Note: Withdrawal of application is NOT allowed after submission.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Can I apply if I am in my final year of PG?
Yes. Candidates appearing for the qualifying exam are eligible but must provide proof of passing before the interview.
Is there negative marking?
Yes. In the Objective Type papers (Statistics I & II), there is a penalty of 0.33 marks for wrong answers.
What is the work of an IES officer?
IES officers handle economic planning, monitoring, and evaluation of government schemes.
Is a degree in Mathematics enough for ISS?
No. You must have studied Statistics as a subject in all years of your Bachelor’s degree or have a Master’s in Statistics.
Can I change my exam center later?
No. Center change requests are not entertained. Centers are allotted on a “first-apply-first-allot” basis.
What items are banned in the exam hall?
Mobile phones, smartwatches, calculators (in objective papers), and any communication devices.
Where will the written exam be held?
At 21 designated centers across India (e.g., Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Dispur, etc.).
What is the pay scale for these services?
It is a Junior Time Scale post (Group ‘A’ Gazetted), usually starting at Level 10 of the Pay Matrix.
Do I need to send a hard copy of the application?
