RBI’s ₹5,000 Cr Green Bond Auction Sees Tepid Demand
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) recently conducted a ₹5,000 crore auction of Sovereign Green Bonds (SGrBs) aimed at funding climate-friendly and sustainable projects. However, the auction drew muted investor response, leading to ₹3,497 crore being devolved onto primary dealers, indicating weaker-than-expected demand. The cut-off yield stood at 6.79%, slightly below the prevailing 10-year G-Sec rate of 6.81%. Analysts cite limited liquidity, insufficient awareness, and cautious foreign participation as reasons for the shortfall. Despite these hurdles, the initiative marks a step forward in financing India’s green transition, with expectations of stronger engagement as the green finance ecosystem matures.
